Family Tree Discovery Privacy Policy
This document describes how Family Tree Discovery handles data which identifies you. You should read it in conjunction with the Family Tree Discovery Terms and Conditions, of which this Privacy Policy forms part. Family Tree Discovery is commited to protecting the privacy of its members’ (users) personal information. This policy statement explains our privacy practices applicable to the Family Tree Discovery Service. In the same way as we notify changes to the Family Tree Discovery Terms and Conditions, we will also notify you when we change this Privacy Policy. - The information we gather and track.
- Information gathered when you register as a member of Family Tree Discovery.
When you register for the Family Tree Discovery Service, you provide your name, your address, the your email address, and some optional details about yourself ("Registration Details"). These details are available to you through the "Your Details" page on the Family Tree Discovery web site. From that page, it is also possible for you to change the registration details from the same page.
- IP addresses
– When any member or visitor posts material to the Family Tree Discovery Service, we log their IP address as a security precaution.
- Cookies.
We use temporary small files known as "cookies" as follows:
- To provide a means of maintaining a session when a Member has logged into the Family Tree Discovery Service. These cookies are removed either when the Member’s browser session ends, or when the Member clicks the "Log Off" button which appears on the Family Tree Discovery Service.
- To provide a method of automatically logging in to the Family Tree Service. When implemented, this feature will be an optional feature that can be enabled or disabled by each member at any time. The main goal of this feature is to make our system more enjoyable for our members to use.
2. Sharing and use of information
- The over-riding principles we apply with regard to sharing and are these:
- Your personal data will not be supplied by us to a third party to be exploitated commercially
- Our Members’ email addresses will not be sold to a third party
- the only circumstances in which we will provide any of your personal data to a third party for non-commercial purposes are those contained in this Privacy Policy.
- Newsletters.
All members can decide whether to opt in or to out of our regular emails be going to the "Your Details" page after logging in to the Family Tree Discovery Service with your chosen user name and password.
- Advertising.
The Family Tree Discovery Service may sometimes include advertising for other businesses. We may use, and provide to carefully chosen third parties, anonymised demographic data provided by Members to target this advertising more appropriately.
- Other web sites or companies in the Family Tree Discovery group.
In the future, we may share data supplied by you (or collected about you) with our subsidiaries and other companies in our group, but only for the purposes stated and described in this policy.
- Changes in Family Tree Discovery's business.
If all of the assets which Family Tree Discovery uses to operate its business (or substantially all of them) are acquired by a third party, we may transfer personal data we then hold to that party.
- Location of processing.
The personal information held by us is held on and processed by computers situated in the United Kingdom.
- Security
Each Member’s of the Family Tree Discovery Service has the following security responsibilities:
- to protect against unauthorised access to Your Details or to any material that you have posted to the Family Tree Discovery service;
- to ensure against use by anyone else of the Family Tree Discovery Service through the machine that Member uses while they are "logged on" to the Family Tree Discovery Service;
- to log off or exit from the Family Tree Discovery Service when not using it; and
- to keep his/her password secret.
4. Registration removal policy
- If you wish to have your registration details completely removed from our system at any time then please contact us at memberservices@familytreediscovery.net with your email address and we will remove them.
5. Disclosure for legal reasons
We reserve the right to communicate such of a Member’s personal information as we hold to third parties which seek the disclosure of it, and which make a legally-compliant request for its disclosure.

Our site will sometimes contain links to other third party web sites. Family Tree Discovery is not responsible for the content, or the privacy practices, of those third party web sites.
